Job Description

Instacart is a delivery service which connects buyers with Personal Shoppers to shop and deliver groceries and other items from many favorite stores (in addition to traditional and natural grocery stores, Costco, Target, PetSmart, Sur La Table, and others may be available in your area).

How to Apply
You can apply to be an Instacart Shopper by filling out a online form and (for Full-Service Shoppers only) an Independent Contractor Agreement.

The basic requirements include that you have to:

Be at least 18 years old
Be eligible to work in the United States or Canada
Have consistent access to and be able to effectively use a recent smartphone (iPhone 5 / Android 4.4 or newer)
Be able to lift 50 lbs with or without accommodation
Have consistent access to a vehicle (for Full-Service Shoppers only)


Job Types

Becoming a Personal Shopper allows you to earn extra money shopping, work when you want, and be a “household hero” for people in your community. There are two Shopper levels you can choose from to be:

  • A Full-Service Shopper who both shops and delivers orders. You’re an independent contractor in this role, although access to a car is required. You choose the hours that work for you, and there’s no weekly limit.
  • An In-Store Shopper who only shops within a store. You’re a part-time employee in this role and you have a flexible schedule. You also have a scheduled shift of up to 29 hours per week.

Cons

  • Service may not be available in the worker’s area.
  • Pay considered low by many.
  • Pay for Full Service Shoppers considered very low after factoring in own car expenses (gas, insurance, repairs, wear and tear on the vehicle, etc.).
  • Hours are not guaranteed.
  • Worker may be competing for hours with others and unable to work as many as they desire.
  • Shoppers are timed and if shift is during busy store hours, there may be long lines.
  • Store employees may not be helpful to you.
  • Some customers don’t control their dog/pets when trying to make deliveries.


Requirements

  • Have internet connectivity and download the app.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Canadian workers must provide proof of a clear driving record based upon the requirements of each providence.
  • A dependable, registered vehicle.
  • insurance.
  • Able to lift 30+ pounds.
  • Agree to follow Instacart’s food safety policies.
  • Must adhere to laws and rules about how to properly weigh items, etc.
  • If choosing to deliver alcohol (where legally allowed) must follow all relevant laws such as checking identification, not delivering to a minor or intoxicated person, etc.
